Sheriff Joachim Matthews 1850-1910

As far as we can tell, only one person has ever been killed in the line of duty. On December 2, 1910, Sheriff Joachim Matthews was attempting to serve a "cruelty to animals" warrant at a home on North Gratiot in Chesterfield Township. A young male subject in the home became scared and shot through the door with a rifle striking Sheriff Matthews. The Sheriff then drove his buck board back to town. As a result of the wound, Sheriff Matthews passed away later that evening.

Born March 19, 1850, Sheriff Matthews was 60 when he was killed.
